Excelsior Dock Cinema, previously called the Tonka, was built in 1941. After a fire, the building was rebuilt in 1945, and in 1970 was renamed as it is today. The theater provides Sotans with fairly new releases and foreign and art films on their three screens. This is the ultimate old-style cinema; the upstairs theater has stadium seating and a heavy rope to separate seats from the screen, the main screen is shielded by a vintage red curtain that is raised when the show’s about to start, and the newest screen is a more typical of a modern day movie theater. The popcorn starts popping for the 4:00 p.m. movies and doesn't stop until the 9:00 p.m. movie is over.
